Mgarr United win Assikura Women’s Super Cup after gripping encounter

Mgarr United were crowned winners of the Assikura Women’s Super Cup for the first time in their history after overcoming Swieqi United 4-1 after extra-time.

Mgarr had the first major opportunity of the match, coming in the 12th minute, when a lobbed pass found its way to Yulya Carella, who could not make a clean contact on the ball, with it going wide.

After a tight period during the first half, Swieqi United were the ones to go in front in the 21st minute, with Valentina Rapa the architect, getting on the end of a lobbed pass to head it past Giulia D’Antuono and into the back of the net.

Mgarr were pushing to get back on level terms, and they were looking particularly dangerous on the counter. On one occasion, Mgarr had seemingly found a way through Swieqi’s midfield, before the attack was put to an end thanks to an excellent challenge from Shona Zammit.

In the 35th minute, Swieqi came close to doubling their lead, when Sara Saliba tried her luck from range, but the woodwork denied her from scoring a spectacular goal.

Mgarr upped their game towards the latter stages of the half, and Carella had another opportunity to equalise, being fed through on goal by Alejandra Villegas Caly, but the Mgarr number 11 could not beat Patricia Araujo Da Silva. Carella would get the better of the Swieqi goalkeeper only seconds later though, tucking the ball into the back of the net from the left, drawing Mgarr level.

As a result, the two teams went into the break level at 1-1.

The start of the second half was relatively stop-start, with a number of fouls being committed in midfield. Swieqi were looking to control possession, while Mgarr were becoming increasingly dangerous on the counter.

Carella came very close to giving Mgarr the lead in the 65th minute, when a cross from Presley looped over the Swieqi backline, finding Carella, who controlled the ball excellently, but her effort went narrowly wide of the post.

In the 60th minute, a swift breakaway saw Carella find Carlyn Eleanor Presley, who squared the ball to Amber Grech, but her effort went way wide of the goal.

Mgarr had a golden opportunity to go in front in the 82nd minute, when a cross from Eva Renee Marie Maizeroi found Presley, but she could not tuck the ball into the back of the net on the stretch, hitting the post.

The score remained level at full-time, taking the game to extra-time.

Mgarr came out flying in extra-time, and Carella, who had been a threat all game, was fed a through pass down the left, and after cutting inside, she hit a beautiful curling effort that went into the net from off the post, giving Mgarr the lead.

In the 100th minute, Swieqi’s push for a comeback became even more difficult, as Jade Flask fouled Carella outside of the penalty area, and in the process, received her second booking, leaving the Owls with 10 players for the remaining minutes of the match.

Mgarr sealed the victory in the 110th minute, when Villegas robbed the ball from the Swieqi backline, before carving a way through the Owls’ defence, putting her effort into the back of the net to make it 3-1.

Mgarr added to their lead in the 113rd minute, when a shot was saved by Araujo Da Silva, but Yanina Ayelen Mendez reacted quickest, finding the net, making it 4-1.

As a result, Mgarr United were crowned champions of the Assukura Women’s Super Cup, winning the honour for the first time in their history.

The Always Player of the Match was Mgarr United’s Carlyn Eleanor Presley.
